Standing vs Sitting – Burning More Calories Everyday

As I write this I am standing at my new desk. My new desk design was quick and simple allowing me to ditch my desk chair. My new desk design is basically a large cardboard box turned sideways on top of my desk that I can use my laptop on at a comfortable angle while standing. Why would I get rid of my office chair? Simple, when you sit you studies show you tend to gain fat around the abdomen. Standing helps people who typically sit all day at work with an opportunity to burn almost twice the amount of calories. Sitting for 4 hours, someone my size typically burns around 450 calories. Standing for the same time burns over 800 calories. You burn so many more calories because muscles in your legs and back need to tense in order to maintain your standing posture. You also move around more as you shift your weight on your feet. Ditch your office chair, burn more calories, lose weight, and keep the weight off by doing simple things like standing to burn more calories everyday.

I prefer riding a real bicycle over running because it is less impact on my joints. Also, I find it less tedious than running for cardio exercise. Unlike jogging, you cover more ground cycling so you tend to explore areas more and see more more, distracting you from the exercise itself. I tend to keep my rides under an hour long, often around 20 to 30 minutes using interval training. I ride out to a straight path and do short 10 to 20 second sprints with a 10 second break between them. You can even do a tabata interval on a bike.
