Fitness centers and gyms are businesses. They exist to make a profit. They sell you on their facility for fitness and weight loss while locking you into an expensive, long term contract. If they were genuinely concerned about your well being and fitness they wouldn’t push contracts.
The majority of gym expenses, outside of marketing, includes facility maintenance, upkeep and purchase of exercise equipment, and employee salaries. Every time a member comes into their facility it costs them money. Whether you take a shower, use a workout machine, or do a few laps in the pool it costs them money in upkeep. In order to net the most profit, gyms want members who sign up and never actually workout. They collect the monthly fee no matter how little you are there. An ideal globo gym member, for owners, are members that only come once and that is the day you sign up for a long term contract.

the Y is non profit, isn’t it? My home (1 br apartment) doesn’t have a sauna or steam bath for after workout relaxing – that’s why I pay my membership fee..
I totally agree with James…plus i would rather spend 40 bucks a month on a gym membership and have access to a great community of people than 40 bucks a week drinking beer at a bar because there is nothing much else to do on the cold winter evenings after going insane from staring at the same white apartment walls.
I personally hate wasting time with machines and gadgets gyms use to “get you into shape” when in reality very few workout machines enable you to burn large amounts of calories quickly while at the same time providing a strength workout to a group of muscles. On top of that, I have been to gyms to do not have fundamental items like pullup bars which is the best upper body exercise you can perform.
Creating my own workouts from a few simple tools like kettlebells and medicine balls, in conjunction with bodyweight exercises, allows me get a complete workout in 15 to 30 minutes tops. In the time it takes you to drive to the gym I am done with my workout. I would rather spend my time saved from a more efficient regimen with my friends, family, and personal interests.
