10 Reasons Why Gyms Suck
1. Costly – You are stuck with monthly fees and long term contracts.
2. Crowded – You can never get to equipment and many gyms have strict time limits on cardio machines.
3. Messy / unclean (example: locker rooms) – Who wants to tie their shoes next to a nude person toweling off or jump on a sweaty machine that someone did not wipe down after they used it?
4. Boring / monotonous workouts – Gym workouts, especially carido machines, equate to a mouse running around wheel in a cage.
5. Cannot enjoy the outdoors – It is summertime and beautiful outside most of the time, why are you running indoors on the treadmill while watching Oprah?
6. The social environment gyms create are not conducive to fitness – People tend to waste valuable time at the gym wandering around looking at people, trying to impress people, or trying to talk to people instead of focusing on working out.
7. Far away from home (waste time) – It just doesn’t make sense to drive in your car to a workout destination when you can workout basically anywhere. Many people actually drive to and from the gym longer than the actual workout.
8. They don’t help you structure beneficial workouts catered to your needs unless you pay extra for a personal trainer. – Just because the trainer is “certified”, it doesn’t guarantee they are knowledgeable.
9. Most gyms are not open 24-7 – You have to workout when they are open.
10.Many gyms are ill equipped, especially for athletes – They don’t have the equipment necessary to perform techniques most beneficial to your specific sport or recreational activity.

I love the article!
I wrote an article once about “7 Reasons Why You Should Never Join A Gym: Confession’s Of A Personal Trainer”
It even landed me on a GREAT Radio program called “Outdoor with Tina Vernom” on Sirrius Radio….keep up the Great work of putting out solid information to the public! One of my 7 reasons is that Fitness is FREE!

Great post. I agree with all your points. Only the misinformed go to these gyms – dreadful, dreadful places.
Surely people can’t really believe that the treadmills, the machines and the limited weight training opportunities at commercial gyms are actually FUN, can they? (and what have they truly done for people?). People who seek ability, transcendence and empowerment train differently, but these techniques are not reserved for some secret society of athletes. Shame people are taken in by the ‘Offers’ at the corporate gym and the ‘offers’ is where the training ends. They are a complete waste of money and time.
I train outside whenever when I want to, with limited equipment and get a workout that is ten times more effective.
