Ropes offer a unique workout requiring strength, muscle stamina, and cardiovascular endurance all at once. Within seconds of performing this high calorie burning exercise, you realize it is much tougher to perform than it looks, tests your grip strength, and sends your heart rate through the roof. Rope workouts are efficient and aid in weight loss. I bought my 55′ manila rope at the local boat store for less than 50 dollars. See this post titled Battling Ropes Workout Instructional Video by John Brookfield for more sample rope exercises.

For those of you who do not know John Brookfield he is the grip master of the universe with many world records, a strongman, and a pioneer in training techniques. For those who question his grip strength, he is able to tear 3 decks of cards stacked together. His other strength feats include:

(1) World Record Holder for bending 520 60-penny nails in 1 hour 42 minutes
(2) World Record Holder for bending a 20 foot steel bar, 1/2 inch in diameter to fit into a small suitcase in 29 seconds.
(3) John Brookfield and Jon Bruney set a new World Record in 2005 for pulling a +20,000lb truck for one mile in 1 hour 13 mins
(4) 1200 kettlebell snatches in one hour with a 24kg kettlebell
(5) 302 kettlebell snatches with a 24kg kettlebell in ten minutes
(6) 198 kettlebell snatches with a 32kg kettlebell in ten minutes
(7) Tore 100 full packs of poker cards in half in 2 minutes 15 seconds
(8) Striking a 50 lb sledgehammer into a tire for one hour nonstop (striking pace was 27 to 30 times per minute)

The Battling Rope system was designed to improve your power, how long you can sustain power over extended periods of time, strength, cardiovascular endurance, anaerobic capacity, and mental toughness.

The rope requires constant tension and movement unlike many other training techniques where momentum at some point assists with the exercise. This momentum is often caused by gravity.

Using ropes to workout require no prior exercise experience. You can work at your own pace and increase the time or speed which you move the rope to make the workout more challenging.

Lastly, the best thing about this workout is that can be done anywhere outside where there is space and ropes are relatively cheap. I was able to find a 1-1/2″ 54 foot long manila rope locally for less than 60 dollars.
